Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos

The new Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos was inaugurated in 2009 in Pothia. The exhibits include antiquities from the Prehistoric and Post-Byzantine era. The large number of sculptures in the temple of Delian Apollo as well as the huge statue of Aesculapius will definitely impress you. Among the exhibits you will see bronze and marble sculptures, fine ceramics, coins, jewelry, photographs and manuscripts of the Byzantine era. The most important exhibit of the museum is the "Lady of Kalymnos" a great work of a Hellenistic sculpture depicting a woman with a fringed garment.

Naval Museum of Kalymnos

The Naval Museum of Kalymnos is housed in one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings. It opened its doors to the public in 1994. The majority of the items exhibited concerns sponge fishing. In addition, there is an impressive collection of old photographs, equipment of older diving systems, machinery and tools for treating sponges. Also, in the exhibition you can see traditional costumes of Kalymnos, musical instruments and old household tools.

Traditional Kalymnian House

The Kalymnian House is a private Folk Museum, housed in a restored traditional house in Vothynoi region. Here you can see everyday utilitarian objects, ornaments and household items of a traditional urban house of Kalymnos in the late 19th and early 20th century. The exhibition also includes traditional costumes of the island and representations of household activities.

Chrisocheria Castle

On a small hill, 4 km. northwest of the port of Kalymnos, you will see the ruins of a castle that served as a lookout. It was called either Chrisocheria, or Pera Kastro or Chrysoserza. Outside the castle you can also see three windmills which date back to 1522. The area is always open to the public and admission is free.

Archaeological Site of Damos

Damos is located in the north of the main road. It was an ancient settlement which, according to archaeological evidence, flourished from the early Hellenistic period to the Late Roman period. Excavations in recent years have revealed a paved way and on both sides there were houses, workshops and wells. North of the village there are still the remains of the wall that protected the place. Outside the wall (on the north) you can see several ancient tombs such as the tombs with the golden offerings near the chapel of Prophet Elias.

The outdoor area is always open to the public.

Castle of Kalymnos

The Castle of Chora is at an altitude of 255 m. above sea level. The total area of the medieval settlement is 30,500 sq.m. and it is enclosed within strong walls. The houses are built near each other. Within the castle there are also ten churches in good condition with frescoes of post-Byzantine times. The Castle was built during the Middle Byzantine period. During the Knights Hospitaller perior it was widened and was rebuilt in the late 15th century.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Metamorfosi Sotiros

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ is located on the waterfront of Pothia and has been there since 1861. The church has a fine iconostasis crafted by the great sculptor Giannoulis Halepa and paintings of local artists such as G. Alachouzos and S. Magklis. The church has been declared a monument due to its particular historical, religious and cultural value. In 1884 an assembly took place here and the sponge divers established for the first time trade rules and labor law.

Panagia Kyra Psili Monastery

In a cave on the mountain in the north of Vathi, you can see the abandoned monastery of Panagia Kyra Psili. According to a legend, the monastery was built by a Kalymnian who had emigrated and changed faith. When he returned to the island, he remembered his roots and believed in God again. Another legend says that a shepherd, looking for a goat that had disappeared, discovered the cave and also found the icon of the Virgin inside it. The shepherd tried many times to transfer the image to the village, but the picture always went back to the cave.

Kefalas Cave

The cave of Kefalas is located near Pothia and covers a total area of 1000sqm. with huge stalactites and stalagmites. The place is also called “Cave of Zeus” because traces of the worship of Zeus were found here.

A legend says that this cave was the hideout of pirates and then the nuns of a neighboring monastery discovered many golden coins in it. The cave was officially discovered in 1960, was explored for the first time in 1961 by oceanographer Anastasios Christomanos and was mapped in 1977.

Climbing

A couple of Italian climbers who were on the island found a variety of climbing opportunities in the mountains of Kalymnos. The diversity of coasts, cliffs and mild climate make this island an ideal place for climbers. Magazines such as Vertical, Klettern, Climbing and Desnivel, have characterized Kalymnos as one of the most beautiful places "in the world of climbers."
